I finally tracked down Rob long enough to get some information from him. His Hurst has been rebuilt with a 70 body and looks pretty nice from the picture. Hopefully Rob will get it out of storage and get us some additional pictures to look at when he gets time. You might be able to just make out his custom seats, which he had the Hurst stripes added to. Looks great Rob!
Rob's Story....
Back
in 1986 I flew down to Kansas City, MO to buy a Datsun 240Z. I owned that car
for all of two hours when I traded it even up for this Hurst Commando that I had
seen a few years before. The guy who owned the Commando was my sister's
father-in-law and he wanted to give the Datsun to her and my brother-in-law to
be for a wedding gift. The Commando was by then in a storage facility in
Sarasota, FL, so the seller paid for my flight back to MI, then for my flight
down to FL to pick up the Commando. I drove it from FL to MI with no problem but
a broken fan belt.
Unfortunately,
I had no place to store it so it sat in the back yard, awaiting restoration.
Months turned to years and the rust took over. Around 1997 I sold it to my
cousin. Three years went by and he lost interest so I got it back.
I
bit the bullet, found a restoration shop, trailered it in, and found that the
body was by then so bad I'd have to find a donor. I found a virtually rust-free
'70 in OK and had it shipped to MI (you'll note the lack of rear side markers
due to the '70 quarter panels).
I had the original seats recovered. I have the tachometer but it is not functional. I have two of the three Hurst emblems but they're in pieces. It has the Hurst Dual-Gate auto with a Hurst T-handle. I do have the stock hubcaps. I have a hardtop, but without the roof rack and sliding glass. Some of the badges are in sad shape and need rechroming or replacement. The bumpers are fair to good. All the suspension bushings have been replaced. The engine was rebuilt about 5,000 miles ago. All the rubber moldings are new. The floor rubber was shot so I had black Herculiner sprayed on the floor during the restoration. It has about 79k original miles on it.
