Current Progress as of December 2005
Lee has wanted a Hurst for a few years now. He was the one that originally sent me the pictures of "The First Hurst", but he passed on buying that one as it was so far gone. Lee and his family have more than one Jeepster running around, and they have a few very nice show quality vehicles so I can't wait to see how this one turns out! Lee actually had to buy what we believe were TWO Hurst's in order to piece just one decent one together.
Hurst #1 - Well, we think it was a Hurst at one time anyway. I had been in touch with the person who owned this vehicle before Lee as they were trying to find information about the Hurst's before they sold it. I wasn't able to help them a whole lot as other than the dual gate shifter and being built in the right time-frame there wasn't anything left to help identify it as a Hurst. Somebody converted the front end to a CJ grill and fenders, and it had been repainted, so most of the Hurst stuff was gone. Anyway, Lee ran into them at an auto show and ended up brining it home.
Hurst #2 - Somebody pointed out this manual transmission Hurst to me that was being sold for parts on eBay. It had all of the Hurst stuff (emblems, hood, tachometer, etc) but the body was trashed. It got listed a few times and the price kept going down as nobody was interested in buying such a rust bucket. Finally I got worried it was going to end up going to the salvage yard (the owner was moving) so I got the owner to agree to sell it to me for less than 1/3 of the original price listed on eBay. I had no use for it, or anywhere to store it out East, but a acquaintance from the American Jeepster Club agreed to go pick it up for me and store it until I could decide what to do with it. I was thinking maybe I'd raffle it as a fundraiser for the website (until I found out the legal ins and outs of doing a raffle!). Well, it just so happened the acquaintance that was going to pick it up is good friends with Lee, so Lee called me up and asked what I had in store for it, and would I like to sell it to him? I told him I had no plans for it, and was just trying to save the Hurst stuff if possible. I told him I'd be happy to let him have it. One interesting thing about this Hurst is that it had a Borg-Warner overdrive (apparently stock) on it. Anyway, Lee is planning to remove all of the Hurst stuff from this Jeepster and transfer it over to his other Hurst, which has a better body to start with, and begin restoring it.
Lee has already changed to the proper front clip and got it moving under its own power now. He is currently working on repairing the rear cargo area. When all the floors are repaired, he plans to pull the body off and begin the rest of the restoration process.
